Deliveries Stopped at World Cup Finals Over Death of Worker

Work stoppage of efood and Wolt distributors at the World Cup final over the death of a 20-year-old colleague

PRESS PROJECT:  19jul2026

Workers at the efood and Wolt distribution platforms are holding a work stoppage from 7:00 PM to midnight on Sunday, protesting the death of a 20-year-old distributor in a traffic accident in Agia Paraskevi in the early hours of July 15.

The distributors link the accident to working conditions in the industry and demand stricter protection measures, better wages and substantive protection of their labor rights. In their statements, they speak of frequent work accidents that, as they claim, are not adequately recorded, while they criticize the companies for the lack of a public statement regarding the death of their colleague.

efood employees point out that the current employment regime for distributors transfers a large part of the occupational risk to the employees themselves, citing contracting, the status of freelancers, the intensification of work and pressures for increased productivity. At the same time, they call for the strengthening of safety measures and the protection of the health of distributors.

For their part, Wolt employees characterize the 20-year-old's death as yet another "employment crime" and call on the company and the State to take substantive measures for the safety of the distributors. They argue that communication campaigns are not enough without stable work, humane employment rates and full responsibility of employers for the protection of employees.

As part of the mobilization, Wolt employees have planned a gathering at 19:30 at KFC Ampelokipi in Athens, while efood employees announced that the work stoppage will take place not only in Attica but also in Thessaloniki, Larissa, Volos and Messinia. Among their demands are the revocation of wage cuts, the tackling of illegal contracting, the limitation of intensification and the signing of a collective labor agreement.
