FPA Denounces Israeli Ban Extension on Foreign Press in Gaza

The Foreign Press Association (FPA), a non-profit body representing international journalists reporting from Gaza, the West Bank, and occupied Palestine, issued a statement condemning the Israeli occupation’s response to its demand for full and unrestricted access to the Gaza Strip. The dispute dates back to 2024, when the FPA submitted a petition to Israel’s Supreme Court calling for immediate entry for foreign journalists into Gaza.
“Instead of presenting a plan for allowing journalists into Gaza independently and letting us work alongside our brave Palestinian colleagues, the government has decided once again to lock us out. This comes even when a ceasefire is now in place,” read the statement.
In its response to the court, the Israeli government maintained that the prohibition on foreign journalists entering Gaza should remain in place. Israeli media outlets and officials echoed this position, citing alleged security concerns and fears of interrupting efforts to find the remains of the last captive held in Gaza.
Expressing confidence in an upcoming and “robust” submission to the Supreme Court, the FPA said it expects the legal process to bring an end to this “charade”. The organization stressed that the ongoing ban constitutes a clear violation of freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli occupation has effectively barred all foreign journalists from Gaza, allowing access only to a limited number of reporters accompanied by the zionist army. This approach has contributed to the dominance of Israeli narratives while severely restricting independent documentation of conditions on the ground.
Beyond access restrictions, journalists have faced sustained Israeli targeting. According to the Gaza government media office, 257 Palestinian journalists have been killed by Israeli fire since October 2023. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate also reported that at least 706 family members of journalists have been killed by Israel during the same period.
